September 2, 2021: CATL has joined European battery alliance EUROBAT, the association revealed on September 2.

Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited is based in Ningde, about 330 miles south of Shanghai, but has a number of operations in China as well as other countries.

It makes lithium batteries for electric vehicles and stationary storage applications.

It is currently developing a European production base in Arnstadt, Germany, EUROBAT says.

“Joining EUROBAT will bring more exposure to conversations with the local automotive ecosystem and regulatory bodies, facilitate CATL to better integrate with local automotive industry and introduce more advanced solutions and services in the region,” said the company’s co-president of the EU-Region, Matthias Zentgraf.

“We are very happy to welcome CATL as a member,” said EUROBAT executive director Rene Schroeder. “Europe’s battery industry is currently at a pivotal moment. Investments into Europe’s automotive and industrial battery industry are needed if we want Europe to reach its decarbonization ambition.

“At the same time, policy makers and stakeholders are in the process of shaping the future policy framework for batteries, notably through the new Batteries Regulation.”

EUROBAT has largely welcomed the regulation, which is due to be implemented some time in 2022.
