Two eye-catching finalists in this year’s Outstanding Project category of the Intersolar Europe Smarter E Award announced on May 11 were a deep-cycle lead acid microgrid in Africa and a 37.5MW lithium ion system in North America.

Trojan Battery, the manufacturer of a battery range called Deep-Cycle Solar AGM, is shortlisted for its microgrid project in Tanzania, which was completed with utility company Rafiki Power.

The remote microgrid project, using Rafiki’s container-based solar panels and Trojan’s Solar AGM range of batteries, allows 70 households and businesses in the village of Ololosokwan to now have access to electricity.

The other project, the Escondido Energy Storage Array in California, US, is by Fluence, the joint venture between Siemens and the AES Corporation. It can supply 25,000 customers with power for four hours and has a storage capacity of up to 150 MWh.

The installation costs for the Tanzania project were paid for by Germany based Rafiki Power, and is the eighth microgrid it has installed in the country.

Trojan Power has been involved with a string of similar projects in remote regions including Nicaragua, Mexico, Nepal, Colombia, Haiti and Kenya.

The Solar AGM batteries were used because their carbon additive helps to reduce the effects of partial state of charge, claimed Trojan.

When the batteries were launched a year ago, director of new market development Ganesh Balasubramanian said the line had been designed from the ground up and optimized for applications where batteries needed to be charged and discharged on a daily basis.

“Trojan is proud that our batteries have made such a significant impact on the lives of the residents and have made it possible to establish successful local businesses,” said Michael Grundke, general manager of EMEA for Trojan Battery.

Trojan Battery confirmed to ESJB it would continue to develop its projects in rural areas with its Solar AGM range, and that many projects were supported with Solar flooded lines as well.
