March 23, 2023: Romania’s plans for a €103 million ($112 million) package of aid to expand energy storage in the country have been approved by the European Commission.

The Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy said on March 21 that the plans were in line with EU state-aid rules.

The aim of the scheme is to support investments in battery electricity storage facilities and provide for a smooth integration of renewable energy from wind and solar generating facilities in the Romanian power system, the Commission said.

The aid will take the form of a direct grant to projects selected through a competitive bidding process.

All of the BESS development projects must  be selected by the end of this year and completed by December 31, 2025.
