July 20, 2023: Altilium Metals said on July 16 it had won two grants totalling £1 million ($1.3 million) to design an automated battery recycling plant for black mass processing in the UK.

The grants, from the UK government, also cover zero-carbon transportation of used EV batteries to recycling stations.

Altilium said it aims to develop black mass recycling and chemical refining to manufacture battery-ready cathode active material for reuse in the national battery materials supply chain.

The company predicts its planned Teesside plant will be producing more than 20% of the UK’s required cathode active material by 2030.

Altilium said on July 6 it had signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Marubeni Corporation for a lithium ion battery recycling partnership covering the UK and Europe.
