March 21, 2024: American Battery Factory said on March 18 it had agreed a machinery supply partnership with Wuxi Lead Intelligent Equipment to build the first in a planned series of LFP gigafactories in North America.

Wuxi is to supply customized automated equipment for ABF’s battery cell plant in Arizona, which will have an initial production capacity up to 20GWh.

The equipment includes mixing and coating to stacking and packaging machinery, plus a slurry system, cathode and anode laser chamber.

ABF broke ground for the 2 million ft2 plant in Tucson last October. Completion of the plant is targeted for 2025.

The facility, which aims to supply LFP batteries for a number of markets including the energy storage sector, will also host ABF’s headquarters and a research and development innovation center.

ABF has claimed the battery cells produced will be distinct from other lithium battery chemistries, incorporating the safest chemistry and environmentally friendly design while lasting up to 10,000 life cycles/30 years.

The company has already announced partnerships with Honeywell, First Phosphate, Anovion, Celgard, FNA Group and Lion Energy to provide an array of solutions including digital platforms, lithium sourcing, anode and separator materials, and battery pack integration.

Energy Storage Journal reported last month that Wuxi, together with Tiamata, had unveiled separate proposals for a 5GWh sodium ion battery manufacturing plant in France.

The companies have formed an alliance for the project in Amiens, backed by investment in excess of  €500 million ($538 million), with construction starting for an initial 0.7GWh line in the first quarter of this year.
