A ground-breaking ceremony was held on March 3 as construction began on utility Jamaica Public Service Company’s 24.5MW hybrid project using high and low speed flywheels and containerized lithium ion batteries.
The project at Hunts Bay Power Plant sub-station, Jamaica, will use the hybrid system for grid stabilization and reliability services as the country integrates increasing amount of renewable energy into its power supply mix.
Swiss-based ABB is providing its software enabled Ability microgrid and storage system for the first of its kind project in the Caribbean.
JPSC president and CEO, Emanuel DaRosa said the project would be a model for other countries in the Caribbean on how energy storage can offer flexibly to grid operators as changes in demand and supply evolves.
The project is scheduled for completion by April 2019 and cost J$2.7 billion ($22 million).
The utility has incorporated around 160MW of renewable energy on to the power grid, around a quarter of its total generation capacity, as part of Jamaica’s initiative to integrate more renewable sources into its energy mix.
