Two energy storage projects totalling 40MW/40MWh are to be installed in New Jersey, US, after a master supplier agreement was signed between energy storage firm Dynapower and Viridity Energy Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of geothermal firm Ormat Technologies, both companies announced on April 16.
Viridity, a battery storage and energy management firm, will design, finance, build, own and operate the two 20MW/20MWh in-front-of-the-meter ESSs in Plumsted Township and Alpha.
The deal will see Dynapower supply its CPS-2200 inverters and fully integrated IPS-2200 ESSs for projects, which should be operational in the last quarter of this year. LG Chem will supply the lithium ion battery modules.
Viridity will use its VPower software to provide the optimization, economic value stacking and automated control.
The ESSs will generate an estimated $7-8 million in 2019 mainly through ancillary services to assist transmission organization PJM Interconnection in balancing the grid, as well as being available as a capacity asset.

On the same day the Atlantic County Utility Authority announced a 1MWh ESS was online after Viridity, installed the system in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Viridity will own and operate the system at ACUA’s wastewater treatment plant.
Johnson Controls supplied the lithium ion battery, and Rettew Field Services was the design-build manager.
The utility will receive a portion of the utility bill savings created through peak shaving over the term of the agreement.
Viridity’s system will also provide power back-up and power quality, while also assisting in utility grid stabilization.
