Centrica Business Solutions, the distributed energy and power arm of Centrica, announced on June 4 it is to partner the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory on a trial to explore the use of energy storage systems to deliver grid services.

The trial aims to explore how multiple energy storage technologies, including second life batteries from electric vehicles, can be used tackle grid challenges including renewable intermittency and emergency back-up power.

Working from the NREL’s Energy Systems Integration Facility, the research team will use Centrica’s battery storage and control systems to manage new and second-life batteries.
